Brief
The owners wanted the building brought back to the standard its architecture deserved, without closing for the whole programme. The exterior needed repair and redecoration in keeping with its listing, while the interior was to be reworked room by room to a consistent, contemporary hotel standard.
Approach
The work was phased so that a block of rooms was always trading. External repairs, render and joinery were completed first, with ironwork restored and repainted. Inside, bedrooms were re planned around new en suites in dark veined stone with brass fittings, and the principal staircase was rebuilt with a cascade of ribbed glass pendants through the well.
Outcome
A hotel that reads as one considered building from the pavement to the top floor. Each bedroom has its own character within a shared palette of panelling, stone and brass, and the entrance and stair now set the tone the moment a guest arrives.
