Completed dental surgery with treatment chair, navy cabinetry and restored cornice

Brief

Create a fully operational dental surgery in a listed room whose ceilings and cornices had been damaged and partly lost, while respecting the character of the building and satisfying the conservation officer.

Approach

Original plasterwork was recorded and repaired, with missing runs of cornice reinstated to match the surviving profile. Clinical services, cabinetry and the treatment chair were planned around the room rather than against it, with routes for services kept clear of historic fabric. Decisions were documented and shared with the conservation officer as the work progressed.

Outcome

Following inspection, the Historic Environment Officer described the work as carried out in a sensitive manner and in accordance with conservation best practice, noted that the internal character of the room had been re established, and asked whether JSV’s details could be passed to other listed building owners.
